Christmas is knocking on our doors and it is the perfect time to plan your Christmas day. 10tips is always thinking of their viewers, so we visited St. Paul’s Cathedral and collected some information for you that you should know before a visit there.

St Paul’s Cathedral is one of the oldest cathedrals in Kolkata. It is almost 171 years old. It is actually noteworthy for its Gothic architecture. It was also the first cathedral built in the overseas territory of the British Empire. The edifice stands on Cathedral Road on the “island of attractions” to provide for more space for the growing population of the European community in Calcutta since the 1800s.

This is the view of the cathedral from its left corner. The Imperial Gazetteer defined the architectural design of the cathedral as “Indo-Gothic”, meaning a Gothic architectural style built to meet the climatic conditions of India. It was also called a “spurious Gothic adaptation to the exigencies of the Indian climate.” The cathedral’s design, otherwise known as the Gothic Revival style, includes three stained-glass windows and two frescoes in the Florentine Renaissance style. The nave of the cathedral is very high at 247 feet (75 m), and its width is 81 feet (25 m).

Long ago, when the church was built there was another minaret on the middle head of the church. Unfortunately, the church authorities did not allow us to capture that old picture so we are unable to show you that, but you can definitely have an idea by reading this blog. In the 1897 earthquake, the cathedral suffered some damage and was refurbished. In the subsequent massive earthquake of 1934, when Kolkata was devastated, the cathedral’s steeple tower collapsed. It was reconstructed to the present day revised design. It was rebuilt along the lines of the Central Bell Harry Tower of Canterbury Cathedral.

The Christmas Mass is famous in this Cathedral and draws devotees from all over Kolkata and beyond. It is held around 08:30 am on the morning of Christmas but you need to reach by around 07:00 am. The New Year Eve’s mass is also a very big draw.

This is the close front view of the church. Already a lot of people have started visiting the church. Not only Kolkatans, even some foreigners too. St Paul’s Cathedral is built in the beautifully landscaped green zone of Kolkata, St Paul is close to Victoria Memorial, Birla Planetarium, Rabindra Sadan and Nandan. You could take a taxi to reach there or you can take the metro to reach Rabindra Sadan Metro Station and then just walk down to the church. It is actually located in a well-connected place.

The decorations for the Christmas celebrations have already started. They decorate the cathedral like a beautiful bride on Christmas Eve every year. Every year they try some new ideas for its decoration. This year’s decoration is also going to be very good and eye-pleasing we feel.

The construction of St. Paul Cathedral of Kolkata began in 1839 and was completed in 1847 at the southern end of the Maidan. The construction was patronized by Bishop Wilson who is believed to have been buried in a vault under the cathedral’s altar, though no sign of this vault exists today. St. Paul’s Cathedral is said to be the first Episcopal Church of the Orient.

This is the wide front view from the entrance. Visitors of different religions have already started gathering on weekends as well as on weekdays on these grounds for spending some quality time with their friends and family. The church opens at 10 am every morning and closes at 6 PM every evening. You can choose any time between this for visiting. But keep in mind that the church remains closed on every 24th of December.

The cathedral was rebuilt three times to stand as it does today. It is not only a religious site but also an architectural wonder. The flagstaff rises to a height of 175 feet above the ground. It took eight years to build the Cathedral and cost almost five lakhs to build back then.  The cathedral’s overall look resembles that of England’s Norwich Cathedral.
